I was listening to C-SPAN on satellite radio. It was the call-in portion
of the show. A woman called to say that she was a Republican and had been
brought up on biblical values. She asked, "Where am I to get my values if
not from the Bible?" She could think of no other source. I find that very
    disturbing.

How would you answer her question? Where would she here your voice?

Hi Marsha. I'm new here, but different perspectives always help, so I'll
    just jump right in.

There are a lot of things to say in criticism of attachment to idea like
this. But to communicate to someone with the intention of actually getting
them to listen requires skill in both rhetoric and dialectic. I would ask
this person what she thinks value is and why she desires value, etc, and go
from there. Like happiness, she may find there are different avenues to the
same end if she only reflects a bit.

Obviously she has excluded dynamic quality and intellectual static quality
from her life, but saying that will only turn her away.

To know where to find value requires some clear idea of what value is. And,
in the process of looking, the definition gets clarified. The static and
dynamic work best hand in hand.

An appeal to authority like this is sure sign of dogma, intellectual
stagnation. But there are surely certain psychological needs driving this
lack of security, and if those needs are not recognized and addressed this
individual will continue to fear the dynamic.

Pat values contribute to social stability; we could say this is immoral for
we are letting a social pattern of value consume intellectual value.

But, let me ask, why is this disturbing to you?

    Live well,
    Steve
