I just don't get it.

My take is that statistically people are (and always will be) generally at a
certain stage of psychological and moral development. This is a fact of the
world. What religious and political ideologies are popular at the time come
and go, but the psychological context remains fairly the same. Ego security
requires that one believe in the correct dogma, and of course there can be
only one. This attachment leads to all kinds of strife, but that too is a
fact of the world.
Pirsig's idea of multiple truths, which I think you are alluding to with
references to quantum theory etc, really requires a suspension of judgment,
a letting go of attachment to one's personal ideologies, to even entertain
the possibility. This, IMO, can only occur at a fairly high level of
maturity. Institutions, which by nature are dogmatic, cannot help us here.
We cannot give someone Quality in the way we can give someone a welfare
check.
Growth at this point is dependent on the agent. I agree with Agent B
(!?!?). The reason I asked why does this bother you is to draw attention to
what you might be able to do and what we cannot do anything about. It is a
waste of our resources to put emotional energy into what are facts outside
our power (understanding what IS within our ability and what isn't).
It may well be that the vast majority of people, no matter the culture or
time, will not get the essence of what the world's great sages like
Socrates, Christ, and the Buddha try to bring to us. We can still have an
impact on those closest to us by living a Quality life the best we can and
seeing to the influence on and the education of our young ones (I have a
daughter at pre-school age). We can be a good neighbor and a good citizen
of the world. The key is to do what we can without letting what we perceive
as poor Quality in the world impact our effectiveness.
We ARE having a discourse on Quality. Here right now.
Live well,
Steve
