I don't get it. It sounds like you're refusing to admit that there is a
difference between a film maker and a film critic. These two very different
activities are not mutually exclusive but that does not mean there is no
distinction to be made between them. The baseball player and the sports
announcer can even be the same guy in different stages of his career or two
guys who know equal amounts about the game. But the simple fact is that one
of them is playing the game and one of them is talking about the game that
others play. Are you denying that there is a difference? What am I not
seeing here? I must be missing some important piece of information because,
frankly, such a denial seems downright crazy. It also seems to disrespect
substance in a very weird way.
And I don't think anyone is suggesting that this distinction rests upon
anything other than ordinary conventional categories. I really don't see why
we need ahistorical truths or eternal flames to make this distinction. Some
people like to watch. Some people like to do. So what's the problem?
