PLATT: Shock treatments can be beneficial as Pirsig points out in Chap. 30 of
Lila. Not only does he state that shock treatments "work," but that "...
the senseless unpatterned state (caused by shock therapy) is a valuable
state of existence." (Note that Pirsig implicitly correlates conscious
    states and existence.)

ERIN: You forgot the main word---INVOLUNTARY. It's not a mere detail. I've read of the benefits of shock-therapy and I believe they may be true, I just can't get past that i-word to agree with your assessment. You know after Sept 11 I think it was the poster davewave?? that said they will just build something bigger and better (something along that lines). I didn't interpret it as a validation what had been done. I think having eating right also helps contribute to a valuable state of existence but I don' t like the idea of being forced put on a forced diet. You may have interpreted Pirsig correctly but the main reason that I didn't get that positive interpretion you imply (despite agreeing to the above assertion) is in ZAMM afterword page 425 " The success of ZAMM seems the result of this culture-bearing phenomenon. The involuntary shock treatment described here is against the law today. It is a violation of human liberty. The culture has changed."

First you want to control music and now your advocating involuntary shock treatments, your scaring me Platt ..just kidding
