I should add that the chapter (26) where Pirsig discusses the distinction
between philosophy and philosophology is actually about a very fascinating
real-life issue; INSANITY. He made the distinction only as a prelude to that
discussion. He's pointing out that insanity is not one of the traditional
philosophical subjects, is not much discussed in the history of philosophy,
but that this fact should not be used to exclude it as a topic of inquiry.
You may recall that this is the same chapter where he says William James was
a real philosopher, one who was willing to philosophically discuss a
squirrel going "around" the tree while the man tried to go "around" the
squirrel.
And the fact that you focused on his warm up to the topic, wrote tons about
it and yet never got around to even MENTIONING the actual substance of the
chapter. This is the kind of thing that makes me crazy. It doesn't look like
you missed the point of that chapter so much as carefully avoided it. I just
don't get that.
