Sam, Marsha,
Interestsingly (whilst I'm in Oz, you know I'm a Brit) I think you are
both right - it still is politically incorrect to challenge religion
despite the fact it is also "abnormal" to be overtly religious in the
UK.
Political leaders get photo opportunities attending church services
(and papal funerals, and establishment weddings) despite not invoking
god in their politics - yet they still have to tread on eggshells
whilst commenting on (the mildest of) Seikh's protesting against a
play outsite a Birmingham theatre. Anti-terrosism is a minefield - a
quota of white middle-class professional has to be interrogated just
to keep up appearances with Moslems (read Barfield BTW.)
Religion is really messy stuff in the UK - at least you know where you
stand in the christian right politics of US (and Oz ! Reading "God
Under Howard"). (Rabbi) Lionel Bloom is still the best turn on BBC
Radio 4. Weird, but wonderful.
