Hi Scott,

I responded to Arlo because he asked: who agrees with Platt that X, and I

wouldn't call Platt's distortions of what Arlo has said mild either, and you
are right to call me on that.

Fair enough.

But that is pretty much why I haven't been participating in the political
discussion. It gets heated too quickly, and more time is spent on "I didn't
say that" kind of stuff than substantive stuff.
msh says:
Yes, things can get heated in discussions involving the tension
between the Social and Intellectual, but that's because policy at the
Social level directly affects our lives and the lives of our loved
ones. Although I strongly disagree with Platt (and Ham), I have no
doubt that he fears the effects of "intellectualism," just as people
pushing from the Intellectual level fear powerful, non-responsive,
static Social institutions. Heat is generated because the substance
of the discussion has clear, real-world ramifications.
As for the time spent on you-said/I-said, there is an element of
truth in what you say, although the same sort of back-and-forth
occurs to some extent in all discussions. It can be controlled by
simply pasting a quote and asking for clarification.
Anyway, it's nice to see you drop down out of Level IV, so I don't
want to quibble. I'll appreciate any input you see fit to offer.
Best,
Mark Steven Heyman (msh)

I find it interesting, however, that neither of you has found it worthwhile to engage in the many Social v Intellectual, discussions until now, when you evidently deem it necessary to take Arlo, not Platt, to task. Still, I'm glad that both of you have awakened from your political slumbers. Your input into what I consider to be the most important discussions on this list will be greatly appreciated. And I eagerly encourage both of you to challenge ME with the same enthusiasm you have shown in disagreeing with Arlo. In fact, I look forward to it.
