It is because Pirsig avoids the dilemmas of language that his philosophy is
inadequate. One must dive into language, equipped with the logic of
contradictory identity.
Joe replied:
IMO for something to evolve 3 forces are necessary: +, -, 0 (neutral).
Pirsig observed in the MOQ DQ(undefined), SQ(defined). Language determines
the defined, undefined, and language is neutral. Active, Passive, neutral
are all interchangeable and evolution occurs. DQ, SQ, L of CI, or SOL. It
seems you are saying something similar, a perennial philosophy.
Scott:
No, what I am saying is that a semiotic event is not something that can be
treated as an object (and so described as active, passive, or neutral). It
involves (at least) a triad of interpretant, sign, and referent, it involves
awareness, it involves intellect. It can't be treated as simply
subject/object, but on the other hand it involves subject and object (in our
experience). All that the MOQ or the perennial philosophy does is ignore
these complications.
