Pirsig has recently noted to me that these (private) annotations weren't
written with as much care as his other writings that were originally
produced for publication. I'd therefore be very careful in how "definitive"
you take each comment especially when quoted as a single sentence (a la
Scott).
Scott:
It would be more interesting if he indicated a change of opinion about
theism (or faith) than to tell you they weren't written with as much care.
Unless he does so, I have to assume that he means what he says.
Mark,
Instead of pouring through the archives for you let me stick to a recent post where I suspect dogmatic approach
I agree with Scott and I also find it odd that you have to be told by Pirsig that they weren't written with much care.......can't you just tell just by reading it? In the faith thread I got the impression that it was being used definitively by members here but maybe then they weren't told by Pirsig yet to not use it definitively.....
After reading the annotations I knew I didn't accept Pirsig's explanation but then realized I didn't really have a definition of faith that I fully accepted and so asked here for others. I got Sam's explanation but it was hard for me to apply it to somebody not in the religious field. I came across Fowler's explanation helped me a little more...but still feel don't have a clear definition for it yet.
I am explaining this because I am wondering whether Pirsig gave a statement to use definitively or not....because otherwise I wonder what people would have said in the faith thread if they weren't fueled by Pirsig's definition but thinking of one their own.
Still interested in others thoughts and Pirsig's on exactly what is faith.
