Er, no, it's not about re-incarnation of the original Phaedrus.
That's just his adopted nick-name for his schizophrenic alter-ego,
named after Plato's original, and named (erroneously as it turns out)
because of allusions made about him in philosophy classes.
Different passages of the books are written in the persona of Pirsig
and Phaedrus. Generally Pirsig is recalling his Phaedrus alter-ego,
but not always, and ultimately he appears to come to terms with
actually being Phaedrus. The 25th anniversary edition of ZMM has some
interesting notes by Pirsig on cases where it is not clear which is
which.
