Jonathan Edwards brought idealism and pragmatism together with the statement
that "things are as they appear to be." This is both a reassuring
affirmation of reality absolutely existing and not being some sort of
illusion or indeterminancy ("things _are_ as they appear"), and also at the
same time it is an explainion of how things exist ("_as they appear to be_,
things are").
