Hi Folks, Glenn sent this respone to my challenge earlier in the thread ...
I would appreciate it if you could pass this on to the forum.
I didn't expect criticism of my paper any more than I
expected criticism of, say, Mati's paper or Gav's
paper. If people thought it was bunk then I expected
them to just keep it to themselves. But really, Ian,
do you think a sympathy vote should produce a rave
review? Paul and Wendy both said it was flat out
excellent and additionally requested a copy of the
paper. Wouldn't a nice "your paper was well received"
be enough if sympathy were all Paul was doling?
Wendy's email wasn't even sent to Richard. Contrast
these with your own reaction to the Loggins paper,
which was a polite nod without being judgmental of its
worth.
I didn't say his problems were 'wholly' debilitating,
just obviously debilitating. Must I argue this point?
Granted, there are people who have good reasons -
theraputic reasons - to believe that their mental
handicaps are *also* gifts in some sense. But then
there are those who delude themselves enough to
believe that their gifts are not handicaps *at all*.
Richard is one of these. He says Pirsig's books
'literally transformed my visual handicaps into
intellectual gifts', even though he admits he still
can't find his car in a small parking lot! Literally
transformed!
