Ian,
I just sent off a message to you on contradictory identity, and in it
mentioned difficulty in explaining "how" DQ is SQ. But this gives me an
opportunity:

(2) Barfield's Actus v Potentia. I can't honestly recall if I've ever
made the explicit(actual = static, potential = dynamic) analogy,
though I guess it's the general feeling one gets from seeing the
Pirsigian parallels in Barfield.
Scott:
But one can also say that potential = static and dynamic = actual. Isn't the
supposed "pure experience" actuality of a static pattern existing in
potentia? The thing is, both make sense, but contradict each other.
And while I'm at it, I can't resist....

(1) Language and Narrative. Oh boy yes. Mark (Maxwell) picked up on
that in the threads on defining the static & dynamic aspects of
intellect, and it's becoming centre stage in discussion with Sam about
(a) God and (b) the distinction between levels 3 & 4. I think the
thing to bear in mind is not to let the whole thing degenerate into
some nihilistic it's all "merely" language outlook - just accept that
"on some level" it is indeed all language. ie it's a good thing too -
all shared meaning relies on narrative, and all interpretation of
experience (even experience that was once "immediate") probably relies
on it too. Pragmatically therefore experience and language are as you
say largely "inseperable".
Scott:
All this gets readily resolved if one replaces "some nihilistic it's all
"merely" language outlook" with "it all *really is* language at all
levels -- no 'merely' about it". But that requires getting over one's
physicalism to appreciate :-)
