Arlo, Erin
The unfortunate part about today's society is how complicated the web of
technology is, consumerism, Madison avenue, values, self esteem, self
worth and a hundred other things are intertwined.
The WSJ had a story about how much Citizen Joe pays each month to keep
connected. Phone, Cable, Internet, Satellite Radio, cell phone. Some pay
as much as $200 a month. That's close to $2,500 a year. So an average
adult can pay $100,000 in a 40 year adult life from the age of 20 to 60.
Just to keep in touch.
And sometimes technology is used to fund pork barrel projects, such as
manned space flight. One of the arguments I hear is that we are running
out of livable space here and we have to colonize the moon and planets.
My answer to those people is: If you have the technology to build self
contained biospheres, we have lots of land on this planet where you can
build these things. Nevada, Arizona, the North African Sahara. And the
best part about that is you biosphere can have oxygen, gravity, sunlight,
and in the worst case scenario where you might get a crack in it, you
won't be sucked into outer space.
Sending unmanned space probes to other planets, is a wonderful idea, it's
risk free, cheap, and you can send hundreds of them and they can keep you
in data for years to come.
The moon mission was a political one, and it's done.
Yes we do get byproducts from such endeavors that benefit civilian
society.
A few days ago the FDA approves the sales of meat product from cloned
animals, and dairy products from cloned cows. What's next, chicken
breasts grown into embryonic fluids, ( We already have a featherless
chicken available on the market, no plucking and no feathery byproducts).
To what end?
Of course every time we make something like that, there is a price tag
somewhere.
Take a look at most medical advancement, they don't cure the disease (
mostly) rather they treat the symptoms.
That's all for now
