Ian,
I don't think you are suggesting censorship but I relate this back to the
discussion Platt and Arlo are having about advertising. I for one don't
question anyone's right to free speech but I am often terribly disappointed
by how they exercise it. Too often it is not so much a question of
fundamental rights as a question of bad taste. Unfortunely ignoring bad
taste does not seem to make it go away. People can say whatever they want
but ulimate this reflects on the speaker more than the spoken of. I suggest
there is a direct proportion between the vehemence of the attack and the
inability to formulate a reasoned response.
Arlo,
Exactly, do we really need to know who is ignoring whom or why?
Matt,
Nice thoughful post. I found your analysis of why incivility rules to be
right on target. Reflecting on some of the posts I have made over the past
few months, perhaps some have been overly harsh. I thought the whole point
of this group was to discuss ideas but we all identify profoundly with our
thoughts and it is tough not to take things personally or to respond rudely
sometimes. On a couple of occasions I have regreted things I have said to or
about Platt, Ham and especially Pirsig. To anyone I have personally offended
with the possible exception of Mark I sincerely apologize. I deeply respect
people like Ian who seek a concensus and Platt and Ham who are thoughtful
about positions I disagree with but who are articulate in defending them.
I am always more attentive to ideas I disagree with and tend to spend more
time on them. I offer up ideas in the hope that they will be thoughtfully
critiqued. In some ways being mindlessly attacked is at least more fun than
being thoughtfully ignored.
It would be nice if all these discussions were all civil but I really do
enjoy the exchanges here. Even Mark makes me think, just in along different
lines. I would prefer if someone thinks what I say is "shite a go go" that
they provide some details as to why. But if all they can articulate is a
viseral reaction that's ok too. At least they found whatever I said
stimulating. But if someone is going to call me out, I will respond in kind.
I like to think it is possible to find Quality in "Yo' Mama" agruements,
too.
