    Matt, Case et al.

The point of Buy Nothing Day is not necessarily to "have an impact" on the
patterns of consumption in the world per se. It's more of a day on which we
reflect how tied up in consumer culture we really are. It's more about
personal responsibility and taking a day to try and understand our own
consumption patterns. There are also a number of events set up by different
groups to bring awareness to the subject of consumption - and to try and
promote responsible buying practises. I go to the University of Waterloo and
several groups are putting on events on the 26th to raise awareness. Food
not Bombs will be having free lunch in the student life centre and the
Sustainability Project will have information displays up for the day.

Food for thought - if you will :)

Matt: I think instead of avoiding products that are produced in a certain
country or region you should look into Fair Trade (google it). The issue
shouldn't necessarily be about the place that things are produced but rather
the method by which they are made, environmental impacts, social impacts and
the like. I would also suggest looking into the wonderful world of hemp.
It's must more sustainable than cotton (or other materials) and it can be
grown in north america. Some even say it could save the world :)

    Cheers!
    Rebecca
