Sam, Matt and y'all:
Matt said:
The writer of the definition was "The Rt. Hon. Lord Quinton" from Trinity
College, Oxford. And of course it matters who wrote it (though I couldn't
tell you a damn thing about Lord Quinton) because defining philosophy is
contested metaphilosophical space. The winners of this space decided who's
doing philosophy and who isn't. That's a powerful ability.
DMB says:
I dragged my Oxford Companion in today so that I could answer Sam's
question, but thanks to you I don't have to. We disagree about how important
the identity of Lord Quinton might be, but I'm not vert interested in going
down that road. Instead, I have a totally unrelated question for you. I've
noticed that you hardly ever post on any topics except for a few specific
areas. You hardly ever join discussions unless they are related to Rorty or
pragmatism and stuff like that. Why? Are you uninterested in actually
discussing the MOQ as such? I mean, there's nothing wrong with bringing up
tangential issues, but what about Lila? After all this time, I still haven't
the foggiest idea what you think of the MOQ itself, only as it relates to
metaphysics in general.
Just wondering.
