    Hi Platt and Rick,

I think this is a very important topic, and though I don't want to polute
this forum with a nasty argument (good show?), I want to offer my view on
marriage and equality, because I have one. :)

There is special significance to the fact that marriage creates a single
legal entity comprised of one person of every sex.

Marriage makes men and women materially and spiritually equal. The usual
purported "purposes of marriage" (love, children, commitment, benefits) can
all be accomplished perfectly fine without marriage, and marriage does not
accomplish them every time anyway. Creating equality for men and women on
the other hand, can't be done without marriage, and all marriages accomplish
it, everytime. By legally making a man and a woman into a single unit of
humanity, it makes it possible for people to truly be equal.

As individuals, people are only half of the species, and each sex's
differentiating characteristics are either open vulnerabilities and burdens
or unfair advantages. Men can't have babies. Women can't gaurantee never
getting pregnant. These basic differences have caused further
differentiation, resulting in the existence of the WNBA, etc. When people
stop being individuals and join a single legal entity called a marriage,
these vulnerabilities and burdens disappear, and blossom into shared
strengths. A marriage has one half that might get pregnant. A marriage has
one half who can never get pregnant. All marriages are equal in this way.
Obviously, if some marriages were same-sex, then not all marriages would be
equal anymore, and the overall goal of creating equality for all people
    would be thwarted.

Everyone should marry, it is a responsibility and a duty, and shouldn't be
turned into a "right", especially by claiming that some people don't have
the right to marry. Not only does everyone have the equal right to marry,
but they have the obligation, so as to create equality for men and women.
