Hi Platt,
I've been thinking about this. I think you have more right on your side than
I do when you say "Looking to God for relief from suffering is not foreign
to the Christian church, at least in my limited experience." People do take
comfort from religious beliefs - and in so far as I've argued against that,
I've been a bit silly.
What I quibble about is the notion that religious belief is a) caused by
that comfort or b) deficient as a result. You may not have been arguing for
those things, so sorry if I misrepresented you.
I'm probably a slightly untypical believer in that respect. This might link
in with my side of the disagreement with Wim over the Iraq situation, ie
when I say I don't have enough faith to find pacifism viable. Certainly if I
came to have confidence (rather than ambivalence) in the notion of 'life
after death' in some form or other, it might change the way I act in certain
cases. I still think that 'you have to lose your life to save it' though -
and that makes a simple understanding of 'life after death' problematic.
