this stuff of yours about reason is dodgy, because reason is real - reason
is an intellectual pattern. If you rewire a main circuit in a house you
need reason as a method of enquiry or you may die. I advise you to try it
without reason and report back?
Matt:
The problem is that you are still using a definition of reason that
pragmatists redescribe. We accept that reason is real. Sure. But we
don't think it is "a method of enquiry." We don't think Reason guided you
in deciding not to jam a knife into a electrical socket. We think a
pattern of reasonable commonsense did that. It was handed down as a good
practice by people who saw other people jam knives into sockets and not do
so well. Pragmatists think that being reasonable is choosing from a set of
static patterns that are tried and true. To think that it is a method of
inquiry, or an object of inquiry is to make the same mistake pragmatists
think philosophers make when they think inquiring into Truth will help them
be more truthful or inquiring into Goodness will help them make better actions.
