Scott,
I certainly don't want to claim that I know a lot about mysticism or
Eastern religions or anything. There are some many variants of all these
things, philosophies or religions, that I don't think any of us can help
but stick our foot in our mouths when we generalize. However, I do think
it is pretty clear that you are begging the question when you say that,
"you need essences (concepts) to even state a nominalist position." And,
as I've been quite honest in saying, I beg the question in return by
thinking that the appearance/reality distinction is "philosophically, a red
herring." And its not dogmatism as long as we keep reading and learning
about these other, question-begging systems and cultures.
