Matt:
I agree that "knowledge may be said to be of values." I think that is a
very Pirsigian thing to say. But I deny that "the skeptic cannot deny
value." He surely can if we are taking an intuitionist line on
epistemology. It goes like this, "One of our basic intuitions is that
value exists." Skeptic: "Really? How do you know?" "Well, its one of our
basic intuitions." "Oh, okay. So your reasoning is circular, though you
purport to give us a non-circular foundation of our knowledge." "Um...."
sq: I understand Matt has decided to call it a day but i should like to take
a look at his assessment of the view that the sceptic cannot deny value.
Sceptics suggest we cannot know anything. We ask the sceptic, 'Is this essay
better than that essay?' If knowledge is of value, then the sceptic would
have to answer, 'I cannot distinguish between value.'
It may be possible that two essays are of roughly equal value?
It may be possible that two essays are of different value, i.e. one is much
better than the other?
Therefore, we know value when we experience it, and the higher the value, the
more we recognise it. Indeed, if our experience of value is Dynamic enough,
it is called intuition.
Thus, intuition is not a foundation, rather, it is the leading edge of
experience; it is immediate and unpatterned. The essay is then a structured
analogue of DQ - when initially written and when initially read. The sceptic
has to structure his or her experience of DQ, otherwise it amounts to wilful
ignorance of value. That sounds rather like Matt's position: Wilful ignorance
of value.
A master painter may 'intuit' the painting before the hand moves. But when
the hand moves, it moves with one stroke. The painting becomes a
manifestation of intuited DQ.
You can only be sceptical about that if you force yourself not to see it.
