    Dear Platt,

I indeed would like to discuss 'left vs. right' (as well as 'progressive vs.
conservative') in a MoQ context with you again. Otherwise I wouldn't have
    written what I wrote 25 Apr 2003 23:18:49 +0200.

I feel we did come quite a bit closer to each other in our understanding of
the MoQ than we were at the time Roger was still participating. (E.g. your
appreciation of DQ as expressed in your recent discussion with Johnny makes
clear that you are apparently not the type of conservative about which
Pirsig writes in the 'Questions and Answers' section at the end of 'Lila's
Child': 'Radicals and liberals who are dissatisfied with static patterns
will feel less threatened by Dynamic Quality. Conservatives and
reactionaries will be more threatened by it.')

This might make it fruitful to discuss again the question how to apply the
MoQ to politics. Exchanging views about how each of us applies the MoQ to
his political views may not bring our political viewpoints closer to each
other. As Pirsig wrote in his 'Introduction to Lila's Child': 'the biggest
improvement I could make in the MOQ would be to block the notion that the
MOQ claims to be a quick fix for every moral problem in the universe.' Like
'the two opposing arguments over the death penalty', which Pirsig uses as an
example, 'left' and 'right', 'progressive' and 'conservative' 'can [both]
claim the MOQ for support'. Discussing how may help us to get a better view
on how to apply the MoQ.

We may think we know each other's political positions quite well already,
but I at least don't really understand HOW your positions can be supported
by the MoQ (even though I assumeTHAT they can).

I do think MD is a proper place for political discussion in a MoQ context.
This could even help clarify the MoQ, for instance how to interpret 'the
Giant'. If you think it is not a proper place, we could go off-list with it,
but I do think I at least could gain from it. So please reply, on- or
off-list. I won't be able to write back however for a while, because I will
shortly go on holidays until May 9th.

    With friendly greetings,

    Wim
