I wonder how respected Wilber is in this country. I had looked for his
books several times in the past in the philosophy section and never found
any. Finally, after checking the computer search in Borders, I found him
shelved under "General Metaphysical."
"Metaphysical" in bookstore terms means "paranormal." (He was shelved with
Jonathan Edwards' book (of TV show "Crossing Over" fame) in which he
describes how he can communicate with somebody's dead grandmother if it can
be confirmed by someone in the studio audience that her name had a "J" in
it.)
Pirsig is often not to found in philosophy sections, either.
I can see Sam's "windbag" point. He commonly repeats the same idea within
the same paragraph. But I would also urge Sam to read Wilber, anyway.
He is less of a rhetorician than Pirsig, but more of a scholar.
