Hi Joe and Sam:
Look's like I'm self-appointed logical fallacy police, so I'd better watch
my straw men. To say all of reality is quality is not to say that all of
quality is reality, sorry I can't do a Venn diagram via email.
Hi Phyllis:
Thanks for joining the discussion! I must confess I felt a chill down my
spine when I read the words "logical fallacy police." Maybe I confused them
with 'logical fallic police.'
I have not the slightest idea of what a Venn diagram is and not enough trust
in my computers skills to find out. I learned Aristotlean logic 45 years
ago, so I probably confused the 'distributed middle.'
My contribution to the conversation was that I know quality only in patterns
to which words are attached. I thought Sam said that we know reality only
in patterns to which words are attached. Two things equal to a same middle
term are equal to each other. To test the relation to the middle term
substitute the order.
SOM makes a distinction in 'existence' to create subjective and objective
words (if we wish to talk to each other.) Does Pirsig fall into a similar
trap by making a distinction in 'quality'? Do we have 'subjective' quality
dq (indefianble), and 'objective' quality sq (definable static-latched dq)?
My impression is that Matt E would say: "Yes he does, so forget it." Platt,
on the other hand divides 'indefinable phenomenon' into at least 10, so a
division doesn't matter. I say, from my vast readings from other authors on
the subject, make a division of indefinable quality (dq) into three: 'I
learn', 'I act,' 'I am.' I assign a brain to each one to sort them out as
aspects of the sq pattern in a DNA generated 'awareness' pattern using
'intuition' or an 'instinctive sense of reality.'
