Hi all
If humans do have free will then some part of us must reside outside the universe.
Consider a "Laplace's Demon" that understands all the laws of physics and knows the position of every particle .( August might argue that there might be a time lag problem with processing the information but as time itself is incorporated in the laws of physics the problem goes away ) To this demon the future and the past would be as clear as the present . So if humans function solely as the product of the physical and chemical reactions of their bodies , then their whole life is inevitable and free will is an illusion , and the quality choice of a human would be the same as that of a lightning bolt . If , however , humans do have free will then some part of our consciousness ( and probably that of all conscious things ) must reside in some way outside of the universe . Seeing as modern physics has quite conclusively proved time , and therefore distance , an illusion , this is not as ludicrous as it might appear .
As every instinct inside me insists that I do have free will , I must therefore conclude that some part of me does reside outside the universe . I can bring no evidence to prove this other than the circumstantial , the sheer pointlessness of an inevitable universe , and my total undeniable belief that I do have free will .
I therefore conclude that human choice is fundamentally different from that of a lightning bolt .
