Dear Paul,

'For me it is a wrong choice of words to suggest that a mind can or cannot
cling to patterns of thought.'
You replied 22 Apr 2003 11:07:38 +0100:
'I acknowledge that patterns of thought are created by the activity of the
mind, much like trails are left when we walk through the woods enough times,
but need we always stick to the trails?'
You misunderstood me: I meant that the mind is created AS patterns of
thought (or other conscious patterns). 'We' ARE the trails we leave in the
woods. If we don't stick to them, we lose our very selves. We don't need to
... that's the story of 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' and it
is explained in 'Lila'. We can leave the trails temporarily in mysticism or
in art or ... permanently in insanity.
So, when you wrote:
'what of the wanderer who, with eyes wide open, simply finds a way through
the forest step by step, sometimes using trails but without the need to stay
on them longer than necessary? His path may turn out to be the best yet, but
leaves no trail clear enough that it could be followed.'
I answer:
He will not even be able to follow back his own trail. He will not be able
to show consistent, repetitive behavior of any sort. No-one will know how to
deal with him, so he will be excluded and -at the least sign of being a
danger to the biological and social patterns of value others identify him
with- he will be safely stacked away in a mental hospital.
In short: your 'dynamic intelligence' may just be another word for
'insanity'.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
