Rick, Roger Bacon and all MOQers:
RICK said:
I think Bacon was talking on a practical, socio-political level. Machiavelli
himself was no Machiavellian. ... he wasn't saying that that's how he
thought rulers should behave, rather, he was just saying that that's
sometimes how rulers do behave. I think Bacon knew this and I think he was
speaking on this practical level and not making a grandiose statement about
metaphysical interpretation, objectivity and subjectivity. But hey, I could
be wrong.
dmb says:
I can see Pi's point, but agree with Rick. Seems Bacon was talking about
good old-fashioned courage and honesty rather than making any
epistemological claims. He was just saying that it was refreshing to see
such honesty and courage.(Even though it was a description of treachery and
hypocracy. Ha!)
And may i add?... We could use an American Machiavelli right now, that's for
sure. The leader who just waged an illegal, immoral and unjustified war
enjoys high approval ratings. I think this is precisely because there is a
lack of honesty and courage in the descriptions of his conduct.
