Hi Rick, Jon and all:
RICK
In your first sentence you correctly noted that my argument was that the
'4th level intellect' and the 'pre/post intellect' are not the same thing.
Jonathan replies:
Why use the same word when you mean two different things? Are you sure they
are different?
dmb says:
It is a bit confusing. The "pre/post" thing doesn't seem right. I mean,
Pirsig uses the idea of a "pre-intellectual" reality, but I'm not sure
what's up with the adding a slash and a word there. Clearly, the 4th level
of static values and the dynamic pre-intellectual reality are not the same
and should not be called by the same name. In fact, they are approximately
opposite. I mean, as far as descriptive labels go, "PRE-intellectual" is not
very far away from "NOT intellectual" or more precisely "not yet
intellectual". Reality happens before you have a chance to think about it.
Ponderin' is a whole different deal. I see no reason why we shouldn't refer
to this pre-intellectual awareness as exactly that. I suppose we'll all
disagree about this too, but I think we're talking about DQ, about the
undifferentiated aesthetic continuum, the ground of being. Intellectual
static values are just fine, but they ain't all that.
Thanks.
