That's a trade secret. But I bet the letters D. M. and B. are involved.

OK, sorry. I agree with David that Intellectual patterns are not
propogated by everyone, and that some intellectual people are better at
propogating them. Lila did not propogate any intellectual patterns. Never
once did she sit in a cafeteria discussing transporting democracy to latin
america, or talking about Puerto Rican culture as it relates to the Navajo's
sense of freedom, or whatever. And she hardly ever propogated social
patterns either, she usually broke them. Though maybe by the time she was
breaking them, they had already been pretty much obliterated by the new
social patterns of sleeping with random people you meet in bars, so she was
all the time following social patterns, while Rigel was keeping old patterns
alive intellectually, even as the patterns died, albiet still timelessly
applicable and ready to be revived as soon as a revival takes place.

as to who is good for propgating intellectual patterns and evolving them,
they are usually educated, tuned in to the media and literature, and,
because they are thinking about thinking to such a recursive degree, are
kind of distant from appreciating the immediate quality of experience of
social and biological patterns. There's probably some lithium type drug
that intellectuals could take to connect them back to the immediate
experience, to put them back into the world.

Did you notice how the Captain intellectualized the love scene? "Then it
tightened, then it lifted again", etc. He says he was in a "dream-like
feeling of helplessness" - that's not someone experiencing quality
full-force. He says he feels like a "spectator of some ancient ritual he
was not supposed to see or understand" untill he suddenly let go of his
self. Even Lila, though, seemed to be "coming from some place other" -
their biological patterns are not the "he" that he had up till that time
been only doing intellectual "idea" sex, based on aggression, carnal ideas,
nor was she the "she" that was usually so buffeted by social patterns she
    could not handle.
