    Andy said to dmb:
So now it's back to being lazy and arrogant. Yes, this is a slogan. No I
have never given a precise tranlation of "subsituting hope for knowledge."
I would have thought you would have been able to make a tranlation yourself,
from the context of my previous emails and discussions on Rorty. Is this
what happens when one grows old? Do you lose all ability for your mind to
    make metaphorical translations.

    dmb says:
I really don't understand your hostility here. I was only asking a question.
Did you not agree to be my offical translator the very same day I ask it?
And I would have thought that asking a question is just about the opposite
of arrogance. It takes some humility, no? I know people have been talking
about this stuff for a long time, but the question is quite sincere. I
suppose you could call it lazy, but I think its just tons more fun and tons
more efficient to ask someone who knows rather than comb through thousands
of posts in hopes that someone actually spelled it out some where. That's a
very intimidating amount of work that could eat up hours or days, whereas
someone who knows could spell it out in a just a few minutes.

And it seems you nearly answered the question three short sentences. Maybe
that would be enough for somebody else, but I am still sincerely perplexed.
I realize that Matt has come to believe that I keep asking for translations
only to torture him, but that's just not the case. I swear to God. I keep
asking for translations because I honestly want to understand what this
stuff is all about. The fact that Matt is tortured by it is only a nice
little bonus. :-) Let me get specific...

You said, "Substituting hope for knowledge is a way of saying there is no
objective foundations for morality." You may not believe it, but I honestly
don't know what that means. It doesn't make sense to me. Really. I don't see
how we get from one to the other. You seem to be saying that this act of
substitution is actually making an assertion, one that can't be seen in the
slogan itself, but that the slogan is made in such a context or something.
I'm begging someone to believe me when I say I don't get it. I'm begging
somebody to explain this weirdness in terms I can understand.
