Hi David,
DM: "The more I think about education and what it does the more depressed I feel."
Andy: This is the exact feeling I am getting from reading Gatto. I feel like I
have wasted a lot of time in educational institutions. Luckily, I spent the
majority of my graduate education, going through the motions in class and
courses, while spending the majority of my time with the resources (library,
journals, etc.) and exploring my own interests.
DM: "A good couple of terms on Nietzsche would do everyone good."
Andy: I think so. I mean reading Nietzsche does me good. But Gatto's point,
and I think I agree, is that every individual should be encouraged to explore
whatever inspires them the most. Self-reliance, individaul freedom and autonomy
are his mantras. If this leads an individual to philosophy then fine, but if it
leads to boat-building then this should also be encouraged. Not that they are
mutually exclusive.
Andy
The hoary chestnut of the individual as the metaphorical atom in social physics
is so hopelessly out of date that only the sorry state of science education in
elementary and secondary schools might help explain its dogged persistence.
