Hi David M,
"I went to a lecture
where the professor said that there was no such thing as free will.
I walked out, and who was he to complain as I could not help it?"
He was the professsor, what do you mean "who was he"? It is his job to
complain when you walk out. Sure, you had no free will about walking out,
but he also had none about complaining, but you both are responsible for
those things. The set of patterns that is you valued walking out more than
listening to the professor, and that set of patterns can be judged good or
bad and is responsible for its actions. Determinism in no way diminishes
responsibility for our actions, rather it directly connects us to the
effects of our actions. It INCREASES responsibility to realize that people
can't just ignore the inputs to their life.
Johnny
