Hi Walter
Welcome to the discussion grounp. Of course we all depending on our cultural
background start out with a set of preconceived notions about the world. In
chapter 26 of LILA, Robert Pirsig calls this our static filter.

When my children were young, we read together as Robert Pirsig describes in
ZMM; I would read a passage then pause to see if there were any questions
before going on. In this manner, we read all the classics: Dickens, Robert
Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, Melville, Conrad, Tolkien, Laura Engals Wilder
(a very good series of books called Little House on the Prairie), ZMM, and
many others. I don't think younger readers will get a lot out of many of the
classics or a book like ZMM by reading them on their own. Reading together
with your children can be very rewarding though.
Books like Harry Potter are more tailored to the younger reader but despite
the popularity of such books I don't think those kind of books have the
depth that the classics do. They are mind candy, like the books Stephen King
writes for adults. That's not to say we shouldn't enjoy reading those kind
of books. I occasionally pick up a Dean Koontz or a John Saul or a John
Grisham just like I enjoy desert every once in a while. And unlike some of
the more astute literary critics, I was pleased to hear Stephen King finally
won an award for the body of his work. It does seem best to temper our
reading with more stout fare though.
Dan
