Hi Matt
You said:If intellect were SOM, I would immediately reject that formulation
because I take SOM's mistake to be the hypostatization of binary thinking,
i.e. Plato's creation of metaphysics, what Dewey called that "whole nest and
brood of Greek dualisms". I take Pirsig to be rejecting the "M" part of
SOM, leaving simple binary thinking, and his reference to "metaphysics" as
to what he's doing to be a me
rely terminological difference (he says tomato, I say tomatoe).
DM: Thanks for this it clarifies your position for me. I certainly
agree that this is what Pirsig does. SOM amd MOQ are both forms
of binary thinking, all thinking is binary I believe from Derrida,
The advantage of MOQ over SOM is that it does away with the
hypostatizing and puts us in a more critically aware positition.
And in a better position to be more open to new/ more imaginative
binary suggestions and ways of looking at experience.
This is why I dig Pirsig. I think Rorty+Pirsig helps us to be
even more critically aware and careful about our support/use of
MOQ over SOM, and SOM of course remains useful, especially
if we can be more self/language-aware of its construction.
As to our differences, I might suggest that there is something to be
learnt about metaphysics from this creation of binary oppositions,
what Scot calls the logical of contradictory identities I think. I also
think that there is something to be considered with regard to our cosmic
stories about the creation of plurality out of an original unity with
respect
to how such binary differentiations are so creative.
Regards
David M
