    Hi Matt

"The whole idea of metaphysics is to get a foundation."

DM:who says? or who says it has got to stay that way.
Maybe we've dug to the bottom and decided to proclaim that the
    foundation=nothing, well that's a very different
kind of thing to the metaphysics of substance.

"If you eliminate foundationalism, or reduce it to minimal status, then it
becomes something that pragmatists would agree to, floating islands, or
platforms we stand on for brief periods of time (brief given the full extent
of time). Rorty's claim is that we can only compare entire vocabularies,
but this doesn't involve argumentation because arguments only occur within
vocabularies. The "best case" will end up being the vocabulary that works
    the best given our purposes."

DM: So, say we are uncomfortable with our mix of vocabularies, there are
    anomolies, we think there may
be some words that work better, in respect to what, why the discomfort? why
    any sense of anomaly?
there is a yearning in this for coherence, there is an acceptance of the
value of the 'workings' ("works the best")
contained in the given vocabularies, this needs unpacking, I think lurking
in it is a sense of the on going conversation with
    nature.

    regards
