Dear forum,
I am wondering if David Bowie can be taken as an example of a sophists?
I ask this question because Bowie is an intelligent individual with
exceptional creativity (aesthetic appreciation of SQ-SQ tension) - if the Bowie's of
1000BC had to hide and skulk around in order to avoid the danger of being killed
because of fear and misunderstanding, (reflect upon the 'social crisis' and
misunderstand Bowie instigated in our tolerant early 70's) then imagine how it
must feel to be so far outside accepted patterns of value?
It is perhaps more remarkable when one listens to Bowie's early material (The
man who sold the World through to Diamond dogs for example)? After all, upon
careful inspection, the melodic structure of his music is traditional rock and
roll - hardly avant garde, and the source of its immediacy to a young
audience - it was the production and image that was outrageous. The crucial factor in
all this is Bowie's genius as a rock lyricist and a talent for innovative
melody based upon traditional structures. In short, he wrote a profuse catalogue
of classic rock songs, and in the process evolved the idiom to a more
sophisticated level of aesthetic.
People have been crucified for less...
All the best,
Mark
