Dear Sam and others interested,
I'm sorry, but unlike you (12 Mar 2004 10:17:46 -0000) I see even less need
than in the (pop)idols-format to make criteria explicit for what constitutes
a proper religion. In the 'Idols' TV shows they need to make a pre-selection
by a jury of experts who have to agree on the criteria they use to exclude
people from the competition, but only because there are thousands of
candidates. With less than 10 religions competing (or if we are
unrealistically optimistic a few tens), we can easily afford to allow a few
related phenomena to compete until the vote in which they don't stand a
chance because most people do not recognize them as 'religion'.
What we MAY have to very clear about from the beginning, is that it is a
competion between (descriptions of) religious PRACTICES, just like 'Idols'
is a competion of singers and not of their songs.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
