part II.
In MoQ terms, we may say that the way is exceptional coherence (SQ-SQ
tension) between patterns. (In ZMM, which was written before Lila, the way, or Tao is
identified with Quality.)
In any activity, there is the hypothetical possibility that it may be done so
well that friction is reduced to nearly zero? That is to say, any resistance
that may normally manifest itself is negated by opposing forces. In the
language of the MoQ, the terms resistance and force may be replaced by the terms
Static patterns and DQ.
So, Static patterns may be thought to be so well balanced as to become a
state of 'purposeless tension.' The term 'purposeless' tension is taken from the
Eugen Herrigal book, Zen in the Art of Archery - a title Pirsig modified as a
kind of joke for his own book, ZMM.
The main point is that exceptional coherence between patterns is almost close
to DQ:
Event stream (DQ) ------> coherence <------ Evolution
The event stream is the on going flow of reality as it unfolds, and evolution
is the move towards DQ as the teleological goal of progress. The 'here and
now' is coherence between these two aspects of reality. Thus, here in the MoQ,
Pirsig unites the Tao with our concept of evolution.
Coherence may vary depending on whether DQ or SQ is dominant. If DQ is
dominant then things are too out of control. If SQ is dominant then Evolution is
dead in it's tracks. A balance between DQ and SQ - coherence - is the middle way,
or the Tao - the best way to do and be and act and flow in the moment, as an
evolutionary move forewords. It is here that chopping down a tree, for
example, is most natural - the axe suffers less ware, the tree is cut cleanly, the
person feels his/her blows less severely, strength and vigour are maintained,
etc. (We may wish to expand to include social and intellectual patterns in the
coherence dealing with forest management, global concerns, etc.)
Hope this helps?
Always happy to try and help,
All the best,
Mark.
