Dear Steve Peterson,

'I think the best simple explanation of the difference between a liberal and
a conservative in America is ... that a liberal will tend to point to
external causes of human suffering (e.g. oppression) and point to external
solutions (e.g. welfare) while the conservative will point to internal
causes of human suffereing (e.g. laziness) and point to internal solutions
(e.g. insentives, traditional family values).'
So American liberals tends to liberate people from external patterns of
value and American conservatives tend to liberate people from internal
patterns of value? What do they want to conserve, if anything?? 'Freedom'
being a core value for every American (or so it seems), do American liberals
want more external freedom and American conservatives more internal
freedom??
With friendly greetings,
Wim
