Dear Platt (and Steve Peterson),
Steve wrote 31 Mar 2004 14:29:28 -0500:
'I would define MOQ informed freedom as the condition of openness to dynamic
improvement'
Platt reacted 20 Apr 2004 09:00:32 -0400:
'Mere openness to dynamic improvement, while admirable, accomplishes little
unless one takes action as a result to replace a ubiquitous static pattern
with a better one offering more freedom.'
I very much agree with both of you, also with Platt's 'Just having a lot of
mystical experiences hardly qualifies as moving evolution forward.' I don't
think you really contradicted each other.
Platt wrote 20 Apr 2004 09:53:40 -0400:
'Your emphasis on "you" being freed from static patterns is still feeding
your ego, ... To forward evolution, one must free a universal static pattern
by creating a new and better pattern to take its place. Often it takes a
monumental ego to accomplish that, such as the brujo had in the Zuni story.
At our present stage of evolution, it is individual egos who break old
patterns in significant ways to further the march of freedom towards
betterness -- another reason to consider changing the name of the
Intellectual Level to the Individual Level.'
Yes, the wish to be freed individually still expresses ego thinking, but (in
this context) less than wanting credit for freeing others. It would be
better still to ask 'What has increased freedom lately?'
The greater part of the global population is indeed still in need of
ego-centred evolution. (For me that is evolution of 4th level patterns of
value, evolution within the 4th level.) Part of the population, in Western
countries possibly the greater part, can go beyond. For them the next step
is transpersonal and needs weakening or rather transcending-and-including
ego. (For me that is still evolution of 4th level patterns of value. So no
reason to rename the 4th level.)
Evolution doesn't consist of steps that are valid once and for all. Wilber
is very good at describing and analyzing the complexity of this type of
evolution. Some are in another stage than others and need other solutions to
break free from patterns that hold them back than others. There may even be
different roads.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
