Hi Mark,
Glad you're interested. I think a great place to start with Chomsky
is Understanding Power. It's really a collection of more than 100
informal talks and wide-ranging exchanges with lots of different
people, lots of Q&A, so the tone is relaxed and comfortable.
There's a website, UnderstandingPower.Com, that offers a free PDF
download of detailed notes, references, historical accounts to
accompany the book. This is a great tool for doing further research.
If you're looking for single-sitting reads, there are a couple of
books from Seven Stories Press: Media Control, and the recent 9/11.
Odonian Press offers a trio of small books: The Prosperous Few and
The Restless Many, What Uncle Sam Really Wants, and Secrets, Lies,
and Democracy.
Both Chomsky and William Blum have written books entitled "Rogue
State", both are well worth reading. Get ready to grit your teeth.
The Culture of Terrorism, Deterring Democracy, the classic
Manufacturing Consent, The Chomsky Reader, Chronicles of Dissent,
Profit Over People.
Most recent book: Hegemony Or Survival. There's just a ton of
stuff. Just Google him and take your pick.
Chomsky himself admits that his writing and speaking style are not
always the most enthralling; part of the reason for this is that he's
so careful about documenting and otherwise supporting everything he
says. So if you find yourself getting bogged down in details, just
move on to something else.
Happy reading this summer!
Best,
Mark (Steven Heyman)

Or read one of his books, all the way through, and verify
references for yourself. Start with something small, say 9-11, if
you'd like to find out what he really thinks about that event. Or,
if you're feeling more energetic, read Understanding Power, about 450
pages with over 500 pages of notes and references and pretty
convincing historical record available online.
Hi Mark,
With the end of studies on the horizon, i am beginning to think about
something to occupy me during the summer months.
Actually, there already is a pile available on my shelf, but you know
how it is, there is always the excitement of picking up a new book?
So, i was maybe thinking of going Chomsky, and wondered if you had
any recommendations as a starting point?
You've already indicated a few here, and that may be good for now?
All the best,
Mark
