it's true. i live right next to the highway, as i have for years. you become
accustomed to it(or maybe "inured" is a better word). i don't start to "hear
it" until i'm away from it, or if i consiously concentate on it.

Thank you very much to Anthony McWatt, MarshaV, Pete Bridge
and johnny moral for your helpful thoughts.
To Johnny I'd say that it varies but that mostly I'd got to the point where
I can often tune it out for daytime activities - though bed and sleep is a
problem and I hate being dependant on mechanical white noise generators -
how am I to imagine my hutting expodition in the hills etc... I'll maybe
keep you posted if I find something really helps - osteopathy has helped a
little btw, and be assured that I am pursuing medical advice, have been for
six months. A difficulty, if one interprets my question as a purely
personal one, is that these noises and pains can have a variety of different
origins (I have had a lot of ear pain as well, and the noise is onesided).
I wondered if there was something in johnny moral's post of wider or
philosophical interest. He commented on our all having some noise in our
ears selectively ignoring it. Leibniz said that perception is always of
differences (left sidedness in my noise here doesn't help), and that a man
who lived always by a wter mill literally would not hear it.
What do we think on this latter claim in MOQ terms?
