The critiques of polling may be valid, but this might be a little off the
mark. I have extensive contact with people in Basra, and the one thing they do
have now is free speech, especially when it comes to criticizing the
occupation. There is an exception: one of the great un-reported stories is that the
Brits have given hard-core islamists free reign in certain parts of the city
(which is one reason you don't hear about strife there), and the result is that
in these parts there are no films and no freedom to criticize the imams
(although criticizing the occupation is still allowed). This is not an endorsement
of the occupation nor of the poll results, but simply a clarification. The
poll could still be skewed, and everyone I know who has worked for polling
agencies tells me so. But the reports I have -- and all from Iraqis -- tell me that
the one thing (and often the only thing) they like about the occupation is
that they can openly criticize the occupiers...
