The philosophy of Objectivism by Ayn Rand. 1962.
(With annotations by Mark Maxwell.)
At a sales conference at Random House, preceding the publication of Atlas
Shrugged, one of the book salesmen asked me whether I could present the essence
of my philosophy while standing on one foot. I did as follows:
1. Metaphysics: Objective Reality
(Robert Pirsig's Metaphysics is Quality - the MOQ.)
2. Epistemology: Reason
(The MOQ does not limit itself to rational thought as that which reveals sole
empirical reality. Quality is the primary empirical reality in the MOQ.)
3. Ethics: Self-interest
(The self in the MOQ is composed of four evolutionary related levels of
patterns evolving in response to Dynamic Quality. Therefore, Biological and Social
values are important as well as intellectual values.)
4. Politics: Capitalism
(The MOQ values both capitalism and socialism for their respective merits in
harmonising levels of patterned Quality. Dynamic Quality can be disruptive if
it is not balanced in a stable static latch. Therefore, capitalism by itself
is inadequate. It can be argued from widely available evidence that the most
free markets ever practised were never totally free from political or business
intervention.)
