    Dear Johnny,

    At 07:09 PM 6/16/2004 +0000, you wrote:

I play music and write songs.

I can't imagine a life without music.  My late husband played the guitar, Spanish, classical, and popular.  I love all guitar music, but my heart still belongs to Jimi Hendrix.  I took classical guitar lessons for four years, but I was not a musician.  You are fortunate to have music as a creative experience.

And I work on my philosophy, that's solitary, though I try to make it social by coming here.

Being solitary is not easy in this very extroverted country.  It took me a lifetime to get comfortable with that fact.  I now relish my own company, and connect only occasionally with other people, and only for the pleasure of their company.

You don't like showing them to people?  Or, it's just not the point?
Do you paint still lifes, or portraits, or abstract, or landscapes, or the corner of the room with the sun coming through the window?   How do you choose what to paint next?  Do you do multiple attempts at the same idea, or just one and move on?   How long do you spend on each one?

I guess showing other people, is not the point of my painting.  I paint to explore.  I paint for life.  I paint things I find interesting.  I paint still lifes.  I like to paint people, but not portraits.  I prefer to use models, but sometimes use  photographs.  I only paint landscapes if it is what surrounds people, and then I like to make the landscape more abstract.  I paint to study the object.  I paint to study my own mind.  I paint to study the culture, and my reaction to it.  For instance, leading up to the war in Iraq I painted a picture of John Wayne.  I played cowboy and soldier songs from TV shows and the movies that were created during the last 50 years.  (I made my own CDs.)  George W. is of my generation, and I wanted to explore the myths.  To me George Bush is a comical figure.  And the fact that he has lead this country to war is very scary.  I also want to continue to improve the technical quality of my paintings.  I don't like detail, so it doesn't take long to complete a painting.  I struggle to paint less detail.  I leave it for the mind to fill in the detail.  I might make adjustments later. -  Presently, I'm painting a picture of a pagan friend.  He's someone who prefers nature to this culture.
