superior to what? to other life?
intuitively i say no.
reflectively i say hmmmmm, no.
as we see with dogs, owners are higher up the social
ladder than the pet. only immature dogs bark. our
domestication of them retards their maturation to some
extent. to dogs their owners are superior.
but this is an example of brainwashing analogous to
how many english would see themselves as inferior to
the queen. i don't think it displays any evidence of
inherent human superiority.
but what of the social and intellectual levels? do
they not provide justification for asserting that we
are superior to those organisms that (by our
reasoning) do not possess these HIGHER levels of
value?
no. these higher levels provide justification for
following them over conflicting lower level
(biological or inorganic) patterns within ourselves.
i realise that this stance may be contentious and i am
willing to be convinced otherwise. it just seems like
inexcuseable hubris to me, to view ourselves as
superior to a thousand year old tree.
cheers
