Dear David B.,
You wrote 26 Jun 2004 12:29:39 -0600:
'I keep telling my four year old son, the best way to fight the bad guys is
with words.'
So did I when my children (now 10 and 12) were that age. By now they have
also learned from me (I hope) that no-one is fully bad and that even
"fighting" with words is not the best way.
How to apply that on a larger scale? How should society deal with
hate-mongerers and criminals? How should global society deal with terrorists
and dictators? Do you agree that "a policeman or a soldier and his gun" are
inadequate? Do you see value in the distinction between 4 different types of
"instruments of conversation between society and biology" in my post to
Platt dd. 7 Jun 2004 07:00:48 +0200 (and further posts in the "MOQ and The
Moral Evolution of Society" thread as well as in my essay "economics of want
and greed")?
"Fighting bad guys with words" would be a relatively low-quality (i.e.
rarely effective) specimen of the fourth type of instruments: convincing
others of one's ideology.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
