Rich,
thank you for your reply, I will read the rest of the list mail later, after
breakfast. I'd just like to clarify the Pynchon-thing. The fact that I wrote
Pynchon shows that I was not really able to concentrate on writing
yesterday. Anyway, Thomas Pynchon wrote diverse books, fiction. I've just
read one "The crying of Lot 49" which we have discussed at University now
for a whole semester. It's more or less contemporary fiction, showing
America in the 60'es. Right at first I thought it was a terrible book but
after some further reading and some discussion I started to see the
interesting parts in it. And quite obviously Pynchon is still in my mind.
Maybe if I'll think some more about Pynchon and Pirsig I might even see both
of them from a new angle.
As for the rest I'll look forward to your "essay" and to others who might
feel they want to enter the competition...
I myself will sit back and read and first of all get into things because I
feel as if I'd fallen into the middle of an extremely elaborate discussion
... I'll first have to get the drift of it.
A good day to you all...
Sandra
PS: I've just read Struan's answer and even without knowing the list at all
my first thought was along the lines of: can't he (they) differ in opinion
without being personally insulting ?
Maybe what you'd need on this list would be a good fool...
"His powers of observation are very acute. He can probably walk into any
room and within seconds know how to play the room because of the various
flaws, arrogances, and bits of narcissism that are in that room. Then he'd
do his shtick and leave, but the room would be in turmoil because he will
have unmasked everyone in that room. You see, "clown" in Shakespeare's
language means "brilliant guy who's allowed to say whatever he likes in
order to provoke people into thinking about themselves." But that's a rather
long title. So Shakespeare just put "clown"." (Ben Kingsley about his role
as Feste in Twelfth Night)
