Hi all,

Just though that I would interject that I wouldn't say that I consider
Pirsig "right" from what I read in ZAMM. What I would say is that he
is "interested" and has _questioned_ those things which I had felt so
very alone in questioning.

Given my love of patterns it seemed likely to me that I might find
playmates in any group that chose to discuss the subject matter which
Pirsig explored.

I haven't read Lila. So far as I was informed (on Saturday of this
week) the book is out of print in the UK.

It's not the answers that, necessarily, link us. It is that we give a
damn about the questions. Most, from my experience, don't.

If we picture the history of humanity as a carpet being woven, anyone
alive is at the fringe of the carpet. As a people we hold "modernity"
to be of value. We hold (our current) science to be of greater value
than the wisdoms of our forbearers. This makes sense but making sense
and telling the truth are often mutually exclusive. OMMV

When I find a book like Zamm, A conneticut yankie, Frankenstein,
Gullivers Travels or many of the other works I have come across in my
life I make a connection, across time, with the people who explore the
dilema's of the human experience that concern me.

Like Robinson Crusoe finding footprints in the sand I find that I am
_not_ alone. The internet, and lists like this, allow the *chance*
that such a connection might be made in *real* time.

If Pirsig is right or wrong is less in question, for me, than that he
*cares*. He has documented bashing his head against a glass wall and
this is, ultimately, heroic. I earnestly wish that one day I should
have the same courage.

"Standing upon the shoulders of Giants"

In every group that questions we will have someone set themselves up
as the group troll. It's just signal to noise. Perhaps it's a "none
shall pass" challenge. You can step past it though and see someone
smothered in the fear, immobile and unable to move. You stop and try
to help or you accept it and move past a fallen comrade.

One day, I trust, we get there.

regards,
Ian
